Who is Simon Beal, and what does he know about parenting?
I don’t have a huge media profile. I don’t do speaking engagements or guest appearances on radio and TV. I see parents and children in my private practice, usually referred by GP’s, Paediatricians and schools, and a lot by word of mouth. In nearly 20 years, I’ve had over 26,000 appointments, talking with parents and children about children’s behavioural problems, ranging from the very mild to the very severe – from sibling rivalry to kids stabbing parents with knives, ten-year-old kids who still poo their pants, and ten-year-old kids who still can’t sleep in their own bed at night. Kids who refuse to do as they’re told because ‘they’re their own boss’, and you can’t tell them what to do!
I’ve seen adopted kids, single-parent kids, grieving kids, gifted kids, traumatised kids, kids raised by grandparents, uncles and aunties, kids with ASD, ADHD, ODD, OCD, APD, SID – and some kids have probably been diagnosed with all of the above. I’ve worked in and with government agencies, and in the Family Court and Federal Magistrates Court as an Expert Witness. I’ve worked alongside other psychologists, psychiatrists, GPs, paediatricians, social workers, mental health nurses, OT’s and speech pathologists. I now work solely in private practice, and day in day out, I predominantly see children and teenagers with behaviour problems.
I’m also a parent of two young adult children, who both still live at home, and we have a pretty good relationship. Both are well-adjusted, successful young adults, most of the time! And I’m still married to their mother, my wife, who has to put up with my grumpy mood when I get home from work. But it’s not the parents and children that cause my frustration, it’s the questionable advice that parents have been given along the way, advice that has clearly made things worse, not better. So as a parent, if you’re feeling like you’ve tried all the latest and greatest modern-day parenting tricks and tips, and you’ve googled and you’ve read the world’s latest best-selling parenting books, and it’s STILL not working, and now as a result, you’re feeling completely exhausted, frustrated, unsupported, undermined, and that you must surely be the worse parent on the planet, try not to worry – you’re not alone. It’s all about getting the right advice that will fit with your family and your situation.
So yes, I do know a bit about parenting. But, like I’ve said, this blog is more about providing you the parent with some information you might find helpful, so you can hopefully make up your own mind as to how to parent your children – after all, it’s you the parent that knows your child the best.
